A remake of The Toxic Avenger, a worship film originally released on the screens in 1984, is currently in preparation. The producers Akiva Goldsman, Charlie Corwin and Richard Saperstein are behind this project. The company Original Media acquired the rights for the franchise which include the sequels of the original film, an animated series and many comics. Original Media will also finance the development of the script.
Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz co-directed the original film which starred Andree Maranda, Pat Ryan Jr., Mitchell Cohen, Robert Pritchard, Jennifer Baptist, Cindy Manion, Mark Torgl and Gary Schneider.
The action proceeded in Tromaville, in the state of New Jersey, an American small town terrorized by criminals. Among the residents of Tromaville, there is Melvin, a wedged caretaker who works at the local fitness center. A band of hooligans will conceive a horrible joke which will turn badly whereas Melvin falls in a container of toxic waste from a third floor window. Whereas the chemical effects affect his body, Melvin is transformed into The Toxic Avenger, a being which will bring justice by Tromaville by massacring the criminals.
The producers want to transform Toxic into a green superhero in these times of environmental consciences. The tone will be definitely less gore than the original. Original Media wants to make an action comedy for families rated PG-13.
