True Blood to resurrect its vampire sheriff?

Vampire sheriff Godric was one of my favorite characters from True Blood's second season. As played by Allan Hyde, Godric was a wise, sensitive and progressive bloodsucker who felt compelled to atone for his sins and for the sins of his people. Last time we saw the peaceful vamp, he was bursting into flame on top of a Houston high-rise.

"That's too bad," I thought at the time. "I really liked that guy."

Did anyone else feel the same way? If so, head after the jump for some spoilery news that's sure to make you smile.

It looks like we might see more of Godric in True Blood's third season. E!'s Kristen says the show's writers are considering exploring Godric's 1,000-year history with Eric though flashbacks.

This sounds like a great idea. I'd love to see how the wicked and feral Godric we saw in last season's flashback became a stoic and merciful leader. And I'd love to see Eric in the role of naïve student learning from one of the oldest vampires on the show.

When the comedy gods close a door, they open a window. Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. said no to co-hosting next year's Academy Awards, and we barely had time to grieve for what might have been before we received this news: Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin have said yes. It's official, as detailed in a press release from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Martin has hosted the Oscars twice before, in 2000 and 2002, and he happens to be my personal favorite host. In fact, he's one of my personal favorite entertainers, period. The man is a straight-up genius, the terrible movies he's made in the last decade notwithstanding. Baldwin was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Cooler, so he at least knows his way to the theater, and he's currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity thanks to his top-notch work on TV's 30 Rock.

Martin and Baldwin have worked together several times thanks to their longstanding affiliation with Saturday Night Live. Martin has hosted 15 times -- more than anyone else -- and Baldwin is right behind him at 14. In 2006, Baldwin showed up on a Martin episode, followed a few months later by Martin crashing a Baldwin show, both times with Martin trying to kill Baldwin to prevent him from overtaking his hosting record. (In the Oscar press release, Martin says, "I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin.") Martin guested on an episode of 30 Rock, and both actors will appear in It's Complicated this Christmas.

I think both of these men, separately and together, are hilarious, so I'm excited about the Oscars (to be held March 7, 2010). What do you think?

George Clooney had girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis on his arm yet again Saturday for the premiere of Up in the Air during the Rome Film Festival. The duo has their red carpet routine down pat after stints in front of the cameras earlier last week for The Men Who Stare at Goats and The Fantastic Mr. Fox in London. George has his hands full with three movies to promote at the same time, and Elisabetta seems happy to go along for the ride. He was out earlier in the day without Elisabetta, though, to join director Jason Reitman at a laughter-filled photo call and press conference. George has been charming as always on the press circuit including joking about how old he looks on screen and playing a prank on Matt Damon. When Matt stayed in Como while trying to lose the weight from The Informant!, Clooney would secretly have Matt's pants taken in so he felt like he was gaining weight rather than losing it.

Wild Things top the US box office

Despite all the worries about the film's marketing and audience, Where The Wild Things Are romped to the top of the box office in the US with $32.4 million this weekend.

That sound you hear is the Warners executives exhaling - slightly - as the film performs, launching in first position.

But there was plenty of wealth to share this weekend - revenge thriller Law Abiding Citizen scored $21.2 million, while spooky hype magnet Paranormal Activity nabbed $20 million in its first wide release ("wide" in this case being 760 screens).

Couples Retreat had to settle for dropping to fourth place and $17.9 million, while the weekend's other new arrival - horror remake The Stepfather - sputtered in at fifth with $12.3 million.

The Top 10:

1. Where The Wild Things Are ($32.4 million)
2. Law Abiding Citizen ($21.2 million)
3. Paranormal Activity ($20 million)
4. Couples Retreat ($17.9 million)
5. The Stepfather ($12.3 million)
6. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs ($8.1 million)
7. Zombieland ($7.8 million)

In what could turn out to be the mother of all casting scoops, Rachel Bilson has landed a pivotal — some would say legendary — role in How I Met Your Mother’s 100th episode.

Last month, exec producer Craig Thomas told me that the milestone episode (airing in January) would feature “some serious mother action,” adding, “It’ll be the closest Ted’s ever come to [discovering who she is]. He’s getting a step closer every episode this season, and episode 100 [we] kind of go bananas with it.”

Thomas went on to say that he and fellow exec producer Carter Bays have been “spending a lot of time trying to cast the female role in Ted’s story for episode 100″ — a role a Mother insider confirms has gone to Bilson.

But is she really Ted’s baby mama? Or is this just the latest in a long line of fake outs (see also: Sarah Chalke, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, etc)? Speculate away in the comments!

"Well its official: We have a great 'Transformers 3' story. The release date is now July 1st 2011. Not 2012," wrote Michael Bay, the director of "Transformers" film franchise, in his official website on Thursday, October 1. Along with the announcement, the helmer confirmed that Megan Fox will return to reprise her role as Mikaela Banes, the girlfriend of Shia LaBeouf's Sam Witwicky.

"P.S. Megan Fox, welcome back. I promise no alien robots will harm you in any way during the production of this motion picture," Bay wrote. Suggesting Fox to contact her personal doctor before getting involved in the movie's production, he stated, "Please consult your Physician when working under my direction."

"Because some side effects can occur, such as mild dizziness, intense nausea, suicidal tendencies, depression, minor chest hair growth, random internal hemorrhaging and inability to sleep," he continued. "As some directors may be hazardous to your health, please consult your Doctor to determine if this is right for you."

"Transformers 3" is a follow up to "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", which was released in U.S. theaters on June 24. The upcoming flick will be produced by Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg in association with DreamWorks SKG.

Imagine a world without lying... Pretty hard, right? We've all had our share of little white lies now and then; sometimes you just gotta pull one out of your pocket. Well The Invention of Lying, opening this weekend, takes place in a world where no one lies. Talk about drama... Having a bad hair day and you're hoping no one will notice? They will, and they'll tell you to your face. Self-conscious about that new outfit you bought that you like to think is pretty cool, but probably isn't? Yeah, that's free game in a world with no lying too. But what if somebody is suddenly able to lie?

That's what happens in this hilarious comedy starring Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill, Rob Lowe, and Tina Fey. When Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais) finds out that he can lie, he's able to manipulate his way through life with ease by creating one lie after another. Unlike everyone else, he can actually tell people what they want to hear, and this turns out to be his golden ticket. Soon enough, he scores huge success and the world is at his fingertips. And if things couldn't get any better, he's finally able to win the heart of Anna McDoogles (Jennifer Garner), the woman he loves - by lying.

As time goes on, however, Mark begins to experience the consequences of his evil ways. His past behavior comes back to haunt him - and in a big way. So how will Mark free himself of this web of lies he so carelessly spun? You'll just have to see for yourself. Watch the official trailer below.

Looking for web hosting?

To begin with, webhosting is essential for every individual or organization who wishes to make their own website accessible via the world wide web. It is usually done by companies which provide space on the server, web hosting has become complex in the recent days and many companies fail to survive the competition. Among the successful ones, The one which I would love to discuss is about a web hosting reviewing site named webhostinggeeks.com/. The features of the site are excellent and it has unique features, the site basically reviews all the other web hosting sites which are available. So the basic use of this site is that when a new user wants to host himself, he would be able to review the ratings and reviews of various other web hosting sites and consider choosing the site which favors him the most. This site provides ultimate freedom to the user to know more about the other sites. It also consists the links of various other web hosting sites, which makes the search easier and efficient which aren’t mostly provided by much of the other web hosting sites. It has achieved various awards and is universally recognized. So the entire case in a nut shell, I would personally recommend webhostinggeeks for a high efficiency and high quality service.

Since it was released in U.S. theaters on September 18, horror-thriller movie "Jennifer's Body" flopped painfully at the box office. After two weeks, the film only pulled in $12 million. Recently, the flick's leading star Megan Fox commented on possibility of her character, Jennifer Check, causing the lack of success, saying "It might be a complete failure on my part."

"But the fact that I had to really put myself out there is totally different than being able to hide behind the magic of ILM [Industrial Light and Magic, which did special effects for 'Transformers']," she told Nylon magazine's October issue in an interview, which was conducted before the film's release. "That's no hiding from anything. There's nothing there to distract you from my performance. So if it's bad, it's going to be f---ing bad for me. And if it's good, then I will have achieved something on some level."

Still in the same interview, the 23-year-old beauty talked about her 30-second making-out scene with Amanda Seyfried, stating "They slowed the film down or something. Amanda was extremely uncomfortable doing it, because she doesn't kiss girls. She hated it." Later, Fox continued telling Nylon, "I was way more comfortable with it than she was. And if I have to kiss a stranger for work, I would much rather it be a female than a male."

Facebook Movie Adds A Zombieland Gunslinger

I’m sure geeks have many dreams. Make love to Princess Leia. Meet a hot girlfriend while playing "World of Warcraft." Have mom realize that it’s not just a game! Among the hundreds of dreams that I’m sure you can come up with, I bet at least one of them is to have Justin Timberlake play them in a screen adaptation of their life. Now at least one geek’s dream will come true.

According to Variety, David Fincher and Columbia Pictures have locked down their primary players for the upcoming The Social Network, the scandalous tale of Facebook’s origins (or at least that’s how they’re selling it). The cast will include indie favorite Jesse Eisneberg as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (was name resemblence a requirement of the job?), Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin, the co-founder of Facebook and Zuckerberg’s former friend, and Justin Timberlake as Napster co-founder Sean Parker.

This is big news because we’re starting to see that all of these people really are serious about a Facebook movie. I think up until now, I’ve just viewed this as a big joke that would eventually fall apart once everyone involved realized how talented they were and moved on to something more, you know, interesting. But nope. It’s all coming to fruition. Aaron Sorkin really wrote a movie about Facebook. David Fincher is really going to direct a movie about Facebook. Columbia Pictures is really going to release a movie about Facebook. Who knows? Maybe it’s time to start getting excited.

Titanic Won’t Sink, Might Go 3D

Poor Leo. The guy will never be able to live down his role of Jack. Shame too because it seemed like he was almost there. He had a new career. He became Stephen Spielberg’s new muse, then Martin Scorcese’s. He starred in some of the best movies of the last decade, and it was all enough to almost make you forget his cheese-tastic role in Titanic
. It wasn’t a lofty goal, Kate Winslet moved on so easily, even won an Oscar.

But now a new generation might get a chance to discover Titanic and obsess over Leo as Jack. And in the culture that we live in, it’s obvious that seeing a movie like Titanic in two dimensions just isn’t adequate. That’s why months ago at Comic Con, James Cameron announced here that the movie would be re-released in 3D. Apparently the Trades don't send anyone to Comic Con since they've just now gotten around to reporting it. In fact they seem to think an announcement of the 3D re-release is as much as a year away... even though James Cameron announced it in July. Whoops.

With all the money being made in the 3D business and James Cameron’s Avatar coming soon, this makes complete sense. Everything is in 3D these days. It’s not just reserved for terrible horror movies. Up was a huge success in 3D, as was Monsters Vs. Aliens. Toy Story and Toy Story 2 will be rereleased at the end of the year in the format. It was only a matter of time before they started hitting the love stories. And I guess Titanic is a great place to start. Who doesn’t love seeing people drown in a third dimension?

It is common knowledge that most celebrities are also wildly wealthy people who lead lives of uncommon luxury and material comfort. When they are also frequently in the headlines, such as those on popular television programs, the top of the music charts or in the hottest movies there is also usually a great deal of attention on their choices in clothing, hair and jewelry as well.

One of the most frequently discussed fashion statements made by a popular celebrity is their choice in engagement or wedding jewelry. Currently there is a packed roster of younger celebrities who crowd the covers of magazines and fill the red carpets with their unique fashion choices, and their engagement, commitment and promise bands draw a great deal of coverage.

Ashlee Simpson is one star who is currently in the spotlight for the recent delivery of her first child, but prior to that happy event, there was the announcement of her engagement to Pete Wentz. He won the hand of the young singer with a four carat; square cushion cut diamond set with pave stones which he had designed himself. The ring is valued at approximately one hundred thousand dollars, but is probably priceless to the happy singing star. They have since married.

Actress Jessica Alba is also a recent new mother, but her engagement and wedding to Cash Warren drew headlines and a great deal of attention as well. They sealed their engagement with a whopping five carats of diamonds in the popular Asscher cut with a surrounding of pave diamonds. This ring is estimated to be worth over one hundred thousand dollars.

Though Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds recently wed, their engagement attracted a lot of attention to the two hot stars. The actress was spotted donning her three carat; round brilliant cut solitaire diamond only a few months before the pair quietly wed.

Singer and actress Sarah Ferguson, or “Fergie”, is well-known for her fabulous sense of style and excellent fashion statements. It was no surprise that the four carat diamond solitaire ring, set in a modern platinum band, from Josh Duhamel would also be as unique and “one of a kind” as the star herself. In fact, Fergie has noted that the ring is “an original”, handpicked and handcrafted especially for her.

Actress Carmen Electra is known for her unusual taste in men, and it wasn’t that surprising to paparazzi and fashion watchers when the star was presented with a highly unusual black diamond engagement band. Musician Rob Patterson proposed to the actress with the two carat stone, set in platinum and accented with small white diamonds. The ring is valued at over one hundred thousand dollars, and is the definition of the celebrity love affair with colored diamonds and personalized settings.

Of course no discussion of contemporary celebrity engagements would be complete without a nod to Mariah Carey’s two and a half million dollar ring from her new husband, Nick Cannon. The ring is a whopping seventeen carat; emerald cut Fancy Light pink diamond which is surrounded by Intense Pink diamonds and two half-moon diamonds. The ring was considered a show stopper, until the media realized that it was the second time that Cannon had proposed with it! Regardless of this fact, and its very public announcement, Carey continues to wear it proudly.

Perennial favorite, Jennifer Love Hewitt wears a one and half carat, highly decorative diamond ring given to her by actor Ross McCall. It is a family heirloom, and consists of a small, round solitaire stone surrounded by floral diamonds, all set in platinum. The estimated value of the ring is forty-five thousand dollars, but its sentimental significance makes it far more precious to the happy couple.

Another tremendously popular actress is Katherine Heigl, and the star of television and film sports a remarkable three carat, pear shaped stone surrounded by flawless pave diamonds. The ring is significant to the actress because of its romantic and sentimental meaning. Half of the platinum band is from her mother’s own engagement ring.

Not many people associate legendary “shock jock” Howard Stern with the word “romance” but that is exactly what he delivered to fiancé, Beth Ostrosky when he presented her with a five carat, emerald cut diamond ring set in platinum and surrounded by side stones and paves. The band has an estimated value of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars and was designed, in part, by Stern himself. The famous radio star completed his transformation to a total romantic when proposed to his future wife on Valentine’s Day of 2008.

Showing that she is nowhere near “desperate” actress Nicolette Sheridan accepted a five carat ring from singer Michael Bolton. The large stone set in platinum has an estimated value of over one hundred and fifty thousand dollars!

There are many other celebrities sporting unique engagement bands within the last year, and many wear colored, vintage or custom pieces designed by their beloved!

The true horror of Jennifer's Body is not Jennifer's boy-eating rampage; it's the dark, painful underbelly of female friendship the film exposes.

It's no accident that every feature film about girls' aggression has been a comedy. To make a real drama about the heartbreak of female intimacy is too dangerous for a culture that trains girls to see relationships with boys as their most important rite of passage.

Which is why Jennifer's Body is so refreshing. Because it's not trying to be a comedy, it actually takes female friendship more seriously than any film has in a long time. "Hell," our narrator tells us in the film's very first line, "is a teenage girl."

Jennifer is the dominant one in the relationship, and "Needy" (short for "Anita" and, hello, long on the heavy-handed) is the classic Good Girl friend. She's quietly compliant and plays by the rules, letting Jennifer have the spotlight. Diablo Cody (Juno writer and general object of teen girl worship) and director Karyn Kusama use mossy flashbacks to let us know the girls' dynamic was forged in the sandbox.

Hair Care is much more than the average shampooing that you do. The hair care should consider various factors such as the type of hairstyle you have, the shape of your face, and your personality. One simple and effective hair treatment is the application of olive oil on the hair before going to bed and having a hair wash the next morning. Other aspects that affect hair include your lifestyle and diet. So, take care of what you eat if you want beautiful hair.

Taking care of fingernails is as important as hair care. Nail care should be kept as part of your beauty care routine. There are lots of nail care products available to safeguard the nails from breaking, splitting or flaking. As with your hair, a proper diet is the most important factor for having healthy and beautiful nails.

When "The Office" returns this Fall, Pam and Jim will finally tie the knot with their future brood inside the bride. Several on-set photos of their weddings, which can be spoilery, are coming out to indicate that the scene has been shot in recent days. Jenna Fischer is seen in the pics with a loose white wedding gown that conceals her growing baby bump.

The new season which starts airing on September 17 will pick up a few months after the May season finale where Pam and Jim discovered that they are going to be parents. "We pick up three weeks before the wedding," executive producer, actor and writer Paul Lieberstein said in an interview. "She's not showing yet. She's hoping to get through the wedding without showing."

Fischer suggested earlier this month that the wedding will take place in a location far from Scranton. "It's going to be a destination wedding, probably in Niagara Falls," the actress said. "By making it a destination wedding, the hope is that nobody from the office will come."

Pam and Jim becoming parents won't occur so soon though because Pam will give birth in a February 2010 episode. Responding to the fear that a show will be ruined once a baby is present, Lieberstein said, "... given that we're an office, people have to come to work and they're not allowed to bring their babies to work, not yet at least. So I think we're still a show without a baby, even though two of our main characters have a baby."

One of the posters that will be launched to promote the third season of "Gossip Girl" has been released. Unlike the ones outed last season that highlight on the amount of lust, nudity and passion, this one is more high-class type with Blair and Chuck wearing descent clothes and simply sitting during a luncheon.

The poster is actually taken from one of the scenes of episode 3.01 which is titled "Reversals of Fortune" and will air as season premiere on September 14. Blair and Chuck became a season finale closure in May when he let out the "I love you" two times to Blair.

The on-off couple will face their own challenge in the new season. Through the TV spot released earlier this month, The CW got viewers into thinking that Chuck still retains his playboy nature when a hot girl asks for a make out. Also, he may be fancying a guy whom he initially seduces for Blair's sake. The scene is confirmed to occur because Perez Hilton has come upon a leaked script page which says "Blair bursts in just as Ellis kisses Chuck". Josh Ellis is played by Neal Bledeso.

Inglorious Basterds rules box-office

Who said August was a dumping ground for bad movies, and a dead zone for moviegoers? This past weekend was one of the busiest late-August weekends ever, with business up 20 percent over the same time last year (when The House Bunny and Death Race were new but Tropic Thunder held onto the No. 1 spot in its second week). Inglourious Basterds wasn’t just the biggest opening ever for late August, it was the biggest opening ever for Quantin Tarantino, too, by a long shot -- Kill Bill: Volume 2, opening with a little over $25 million in 2004, is a distant second.

I didn’t think District 9 would drop as much as it did in its second week -- 51 percent -- but with other genre flicks taking much bigger drops lately, that’s probably not so bad. But look at the chick flicks holding their own: only a 27 percent drop for Julie & Julia? There’s clearly some good word of mouth at work here.

It’s not looking so good for three other new wide releases this week. Shorts, Robert Rodriguez’s new kiddie fantasy flick, debuted down at No. 6, with takings of $6.4 million. That’s better than Post Grad, the Alexis Bledel romantic comedy, which earned only $2.7 million in its first weekend, to debut at No. 11. And X Games 3D The Movie saw one of the worst openings ever for a wide release: it came in at No. 19 with a payday of $837,216 -- that’s aper-screen average of $598. That’s less than my rent. Ouch. Maybe the August doldrums aren’t quite beat yet.

SOUTH PARK – A Quick Overview

Almost everyone must be aware about the far-familiar term “South Park”. The famed short film “Spirit of Christmas” gave birth to this award winning show which debuted in 1997 with great victory and consistent high ratings any basic cable program could have, thus making the show one of Comedy Central’s highest-rated programs.
South Park is an animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone featuring the lives of four boys- Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman and Kenny McCormick- and their frequent peculiar adventures in Colorado.
Stan is the “everybody man” in the group. He is the normal average American Kid with surprising experiences for his small-town life. He shares with Kyle a leadership role as the main protagonist in the show. He is modelled after Parker and Kyle is based after Stone, intentionally to mirror the real-life friendship between the creators. They would have disagreements but would resolve and settle things easily without long term damage in their friendship. This is the same also with their other friends and classmates.
Kyle is known as the smart kid who provides solutions and gives ideas a clear-headed thought, most of the time showing them the moral outlook on things based on his knowledge and understanding. He is one of the distinct Jewish children on the show, making him more like an outsider in the group. Several episodes focus on Kyle and his religion. His portrayal is often dealt with satire and won him has elicit praises and criticisms from Jewish viewers.
Cartman is the obnoxious, foul-mouthed, spoiled fat kid; he portrayed to be the antagonist in opposition to his friends. His anti-Semitic attitude resulted in a continued rivalry with Kyle and sets in motion the events serving as the main plot to the episode. To this day, Cartman remained to be one of the most notable characters in the series. Kenny on the other hand comes from a relatively poor household presided over by brutal and alcoholic parents. He wears parka hood so tightly thus covering his mouth and his face mostly resulting to muffled speech. When it comes to sexually related subjects, he is the one in the know on these matters.
Infamous for the numerous gags, violence and sexual content and satirical celebrity performances; the episodes tend to use more social satires and humour thus reminding adults how it was like to be back in their younger years again when everything is simple, amusing, and exhilarating. Basically, the plot ranges from the ordinary to the supernatural and extraordinary. It revolves around religion, politics and other relevant topics under the sun, thus giving them the opportunity to spoof both sides of a controversial issue.
In the attempt to maintain a specific audience, the creators of the show insisted on creating a moral centre to show the underlying innocence in a child. Normally, the characters would deliberate on what has transpired during an episode and communicate a significant message from it.

The Autobots have shifted into fifth gear and nothing, not even a pummeling by critics across the board, can slow them down.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen added $36.7 million to its pile of loot on Friday bringing its three-day box office take to $126 million. Thursday's total was an impressive $28.6 million after a record-breaking $60.7 million opening on Wednesday.

Anchored behind Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and ILM's visual effects wizardry, Michael Bay's Transformers 2 has a legitimate shot at toppling The Dark Knight's five-day opening record of $203.7 million. It will need to average roughly $40 on Saturday and Sunday, a realistic possibility considering Friday's total and the number of working folks who had to wait until the weekend for a viewing.

In comparison, the original Transformers film scored $155.4 million through its first five days at the box office. Revenge of the Fallen will have surpassed that total in four.

Mysterious Toy Story 3 Character Revealed

About a week ago, director Pete Docter revealed that a new "Toy Story 3" character is hidden in one of the scenes of the new Pixar "Up" movie. He said: "There's a shot where a little girl is in her room and the house goes by. She's playing with her toys. She's playing with her little plane. She gets up, and she looks [out the window] . under her bed is one of the new stars of 'Toy Story 3'. You have to look close." Many took a closer look at the scene that appears in the "Up" trailer and found several items under the bed, including a teddy bear, slippers, a potato chip and a carpet. Now, PixarCollector has confirmed with their sources close to Pixar that the Teddy Bear is the new character. And he has a name. It's Lotso.

Terminator Salvation' Conquers Its First Day

Opening wide across the U.S. on Thursday, May 21,"Terminator Salvation" was off to a solid start. The fourth installment of the "Terminator" series has dominated the Thursday's domestic sales, pulling in $13.4 million from 3,480 sites. The opening bow included the estimated $3 million from midnight showings.

"Terminator" opening tally is a bit more than half what "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" opened to on the exact same day last year. If this McG-directed movie follows the same path as the fourth "Indiana Jones" movie, which went on to collect $152 million by the end of the five-day weekend, it is likely to garner around $70 million over the Memorial Day weekend regardless of strong competition from "Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian".

Angels & Demons Beats Star Trek

Just as moviegoers paid no attention to critics or conservative Catholics when The Da Vinci Code opened three years ago, they turned out mass-ively for Angels & Demons over the weekend, ignoring nearly universal condemnation by reviewers for the major newspapers and by the Catholic League, the nation's largest Catholic lay organization (although the official Vatican newspaper dismissed it as harmless). The Sony movie, directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, grossed an estimated $48 million domestically and a whopping $104.3 million overseas, performing the strongest in Catholic countries, according to Daily Variety. While the sequel did not come close to equaling Da Vinci's opening tally ($77 million domestically and $155 million overseas), it came in at the high end of analysts' forecasts and its foreign gross was by far the biggest of any film this year. Meanwhile, Angels & Demons received strong competition from Paramount's Star Trek, which took in about $43 million in its second weekend, to bring its 10-day total to $147.6 million. It actually outperformed Angels on Saturday and may also have done so on Sunday (final figures are due to be released later today). Nearly 12 percent of Star Trek's gross has come from higher-priced tickets in IMAX theaters, but it is being evicted from those theaters next weekend by Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. Coming in at No. 3 was the third week of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which earned $14.8 million, down 44 percent from the previous week. Opening in limited release, the Jennifer Aniston comedy Management took in an unfriendly $378,000 in 212 theaters. Overall, the box office continued on its hot streak, with ticket sales up about 4 percent over the comparable weekend a year ago.

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot beamed into its coffers $76.5 million in its opening weekend, well outpacing the $50 mil debut Paramount Pictures had (rather conservatively, one might say) predicted.

Star Trek took in $72.5 mil from Friday through Sunday, on top of $4 mil in midnight-Thursday receipts. Also included in its haul is $8.2 million in IMAX ticket sales, besting the super-big-screen record set last summer by The Dark Knight.

Star Trek made more on Friday alone — $26.8 million — than nine of the franchise's previous 10 films drew in their respective opening weekends, says Exhibitor Relations. Also, Abrams' Star Trek brought in more coin in its first weekend than the most recent Trek film (2002' Nemesis) did in its first 90 days of release.

Paramount expects Star Trek to gross over $200 mil this summer, against a $140 mil budget — approximately $53.47 of which went to Winona Ryder's old-age makeup.

Rounding out the weekend's top five were X-Men Origins: Wolverine ($27 million, brining its to-date tally to $130 mil), Ghost of Girlfriends Past ($10.5 mil), Obsessed ($6.6 mil) and 17 Again ($4.4 mil).

The weekend only other wide release, Scrubs star Donald Faison's Next Day Air, placed No. 6 with a $4 mil opening.

They call him Wolverine, and he’s the best at what he does, and what he does is shred the box office with berserker rage! Okay, enough of the Wolverine analogies, but you can’t help but be impressed with the $87 million haul of X-Men Origins: Wolverine!

What a way to start off the summer–with the 2009 box office up over last year, people are still hungry for movies, even in this economy. Fox need not fret any more about the pirated version that leaked out, hurting the box office, because the Hugh Jackman-starrer proved that people love to see movies in the theaters.

But the one thing Wolverine’s healing factor and near-indestructible adamantium-laced skeleton can’t stop, and that’s the critical drubbing it’s receiving. It stands at an awful 37% rating over at RottenTomatoes.com, though Screen Rant’s owner and Editor-in-Chief Vic Holtreman gave it 3 out of 5 stars. I’ve been reading online that it’s also getting fair-to-poor word-of-mouth ratings from viewers, and that has the potential to hurt the film in the coming weeks.

State Of Play Review

State of Play is a classy piece of Hollywood filmmaking that delivers an entertaining two hours in the cinema and features enjoyable star performances from Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams.

The film which is based on the British BBC series of the same name (which first aired in 2003) unfolds in the tradition of other newspaper films such as All The Presidents Men and even His Girl Friday. State of Play is an old fashioned thriller that deals with political conspiracy, journalistic values and as a running theme - how the internet has changed the written word.

In a way State of Play’s under-performance at the box office mirrors the print journalism vs. blogging theme that is woven throughout the film’s running time. In the same way that a lot of people now look for their news online, the target audience for A State of Play will probably wait for the film to hit DVD before catching it, thus making the film unprofitable, and therefore possibly hurting the chance of other films of this ilk hitting the big screen. A shame.

What makes State of Play so enjoyable is that there’s a solid story and good performances. The film should feature a disclaimer saying “no CGI or snappy edits are contained in this feature.” it’s Hollywood filmmaking at it’s purest and I highly rate it for that.

It was only about a month ago that Ridley Scott publicly stated he was extremely impressed with what James Cameron is doing with his upcoming “revolutionary” CGI-fest known as Avatar. He effectively said he’d be following in his footsteps as far as using the technology with his own upcoming movie Forever War, as well as calling it “phenomenal.” However, it seems that Scott hasn’t been the only director to be wowed by Mr Cameron’s work.

There have been a few directors that have been lured to the set of Avatar ever since it started filming, including the big guys, Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson (you may have heard the names…), but also the diverse filmmaker Steven Soderbergh. The Ocean’s and Traffic director let his thoughts be known about it a while ago, but has given some more more recently.

Star Wars Back In Production In Hollywood

There isn’t a new Star Wars movie in production if that’s what you’re thinking. And, the live-action series Lucas is planning is still in the writing and pre-production phase.

What’s really going on then?

A West Hollywood sound stage is full of familiar faces like Ackbar, C3PO and Boba Fett as Lucasfilm produces new material for an updating of Disney’s Star Tours ride. You can always trust Disney and Lucas to keep up with the newest in entertainment tech.

It’s hardly surprising Lucas is sticking to the “classic trilogy” heroes and villains for the updating. I mean, what are the odds that we’ll catch anything resembling a glimpse of Jar Jar Binks anywhere?

Michael Sheen To Be Tron 2 Villain?

Michael Sheen is one of those actors who not only plays the part but becomes the person he is portraying. Much like Daniel Day-Lewis in that sense, Sheen has made a career of playing real-life celebrities. Some examples being Tony Blair in The Queen (as well as in other projects), TV personality and journalist David Frost in Frost/Nixon, and most recently the infamous Leeds United soccer team manager Brian Clough in The Damned United.

However, that’s not all he does - he also goes for the more fantastical roles such as Lucian in the Underworld series and his upcoming role in The Twilight Saga’s New Moon. Now, it looks like he may follow the fantasy route again as rumors and speculation are abound that he will star in the upcoming long-awaited sequel Tron 2.

The speculation all started when Sheen mentioned on Twitter yesterday that he was starring in some sort of mysterious film that he isn’t allowed to talk about yet. The obvious questions came up about projects he’s already announced to be in such as New Moon, Alice in Wonderland or The Special Relationship (playing Tony Blair again), but alas: no dice.

Before his tragic and ill-timed passing, Heath Ledger was in the middle of making another film after his inspiring characterization of The Joker in The Dark Knight. This last project that Heath Ledger worked on was The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. After Heath’s passing, big name actors Colin Farrell, Jude Law and Johnny Depp stepped in to play the role of Tony that Heath was playing to help finish the film. This Terry Gilliam-directed (Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas, Monty Python And The Holy Grail) fantasy film is about an extraordinary traveling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom.

Additional cast members for the movie include Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits and Verne Troyer. (Well at least Verne isn’t making any more “personal” videos!) For those who don’t know, the Cannes Film Festival began in 1946 and takes place annually at the end of May at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, in the resort town of Cannes, in the south of France. The festival is an important venue for European films and a popular venue for film producers to launch their new projects in attempt to sell their works to the many distributors who come from all over the globe to take part in the prestigious event.

Eclipse Director Hates Twilight?

The recently announced director of The Twilight Saga’s Eclipse, David Slade, has had his twitter account completely removed. Why? And what does that have to do with anything?

Well, because one of his tweets from back when Twilight hit theaters last fall made fun of the movie and revealed that Slade wanted to avoid it like the Plague. Uh oh!

The folks over at /Film uncovered this interesting information and have an audio clip up of director David Slade talking on a radio show about what he had said. Just to clarify, he didn’t say he hates the movie, he just joked about how he had no interest in seeing it because he obviously thought it was stupid and he relayed that info to his followers in a poetic and humorous fashion.

G.I. Joe Will Not Be Political

The background of the whole G.I. Joe mythology, which dates back to World War II, plus all of the military activity (outfits and such…) we’ve seen in the footage released so far, suggests some sort of political angle within the movie. Well, according to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, that’s not the case:

“This G.I. Joe has nothing to do with American foreign policy. It’s about a team of skilled operatives fighting an evil organization that’s trying to take over the world. There are no politics in it at all.”

Also, when comparisons were brought up between G.I. Joe and Transformers, Bonaventura weighed in with an objection:

“Actually, we were working on a G.I. Joe movie long before we did Transformers and our Joe isn’t based on the animated series–it’s based on the comic books that came out in 1982 and 1983.”

You wouldn’t expect a G.I. Joe movie that looks as silly as this one does to be chalk full of intelligent commentary on the political world of today. However, it may be expected that politics would play at least some part in it, even if isn’t a major one. It’s kind of encouraging to hear they are going at it as a purely “fun” and action type of movie that you’d want to see - I’m pretty sure the audiences that have been wanting a live-action G.I. Joe for years now aren’t heading to the theater in the hopes for a political lecture.
